Before becoming Yahoo! Widgets in 2005, these files were widgets from Konfabulator. The choices of applications were numerous: clocks, calendars, stock tickers, weather, maps and many others. The widgets from Konfabulator came equipped with an API (Application Programming Interface) based in JavaScript for developer use. Today, they use an XML (Extensible Markup Language) interpreter and still run under a standard JavaScript run time environment.

Since its acquisition by Yahoo!, the newest version of the widget engine available has additional features available. You can now view icons of the widgets that are running, and more operating system specific commands have been added, including shell commands for the Windows operating system and AppleScript for the MAC platform. Some new versions allow for developers to use Flash or WebKit to create widgets using JavaScript and HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) encoding.
When looking at widgets that are available on Yahoo! Widgets, it is useful to keep in mind that these widgets are created by other people just like you. Yahoo! Widgets will list the widget's creator and its function in the download list, so you will be able to tell who built the widget and what it does. If you are completely new to widgets, Yahoo! does offer a “starting” widget package that you can download that completes various common tasks. Make sure that you download a widget only from reliable sources.
You can even create your own widget if you cannot find one that suites your needs. Widgets can track information for display on your desktop and they can be used as count-down timers. There are rules to be referenced and instructions available for ease of use in creating a widget. A widget can be designed to fill almost any need.
